Why the Bangkok Pattaya Combination Works So Well:
Bangkok and Pattaya are only 150 kilometres apart in distance and yet they have a completely different experience, which is what makes a 5 day tour of Bangkok Pattaya so satisfying. You're not booking two of the same things, you're booking two really different things one after the other.
Pattaya is Thailand's most popular beach resort city. It is located on the eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand in Chonburi Province and is a popular tourist destination, with millions of visitors coming in each year. The beach resorts, convenient access from Bangkok, the abundance of water sports and the seafood restaurants, night time entertainment make it the place of choice for visitors looking for ocean time without a trip down south.
Bangkok is a strange place altogether: the political, cultural and commercial heart of Thailand, a megacity of 10 million inhabitants. Its temple circuit (Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun) is one of the most popular in all Southeast Asia. At all price points, its food scene is world-class. Its markets are renowned for being both variety and value, ranging from Chatuchak to Pratunam. Its river the Chao Phraya has been the lifeblood of the city for centuries, bordered by temples, palaces and luxury hotels.
For first timers in the world traveling from Nepal to Southeast Asia, this package is the ultimate introduction to Thailand.
What to Expect on the Coral Island Tour from Pattaya
Tourists from Nepal will always talk about the Coral Island day trip or the Koh Larn excursion as the most popular event of this Bangkok Pattaya package. Here's what to realistically expect:
How to get there: It will take you one hour by private vehicle to reach Bali Hai Pier in South Pattaya from your Pattaya hotel. The ride from Mekong to Koh Larn in the speedboat lasts about 45 minutes and is a good ride as it crosses open waters, splashes with sea spray and the coastline of Pattaya are visible from the speedboat.
On the Island: Koh Larn has a few beaches. The largest and most popular beach is Tawaen beach which is well equipped, has restaurants on the beach and is very calm for swimming. For those seeking less noise and more privacy, Samae Beach is smaller. The water around the island is much clearer than the Pattaya city beaches; the sandy bottom can be seen in even waist-deep water, and snorkeling allows sightings of coral formations and tropical fish.
Water sports: There are water sports available on the beach for extra fees. There are vendors on the beach offering parasailing (around THB 400-600 per person), banana boat rides and jet skis (around THB 600-800 per 15 minutes), and underwater scooters.
Items to bring: Sunscreen (high SPF the Thai sun is intense), a swimsuit, a change of clothes, flip-flops, cash in THB to purchase water sports and beverages and a waterproof bag for your phone.
Lunch: There is a complimentary Thai lunch served at a beach restaurant. It is normally a set lunch with fresh seafood, stir-fried vegetables, rice and local cuisine.
Bangkok City Tour: Temples, Markets, and the Grand Palace
The Bangkok city tour section of this package visits the historic Rattanakosin Island area, the royal and religious heart of Bangkok. It is here that the city was established in 1782 by King Rama I which is currently the spiritual capital of Thailand.
Take at least 90 minutes to wander through the Grand Palace. Dress code is enforced: No flip-flops, sleeveless tops or shorts. In case you forget, sarongs can be rented at the entrance. Within the palace complex are several royal ceremonial halls, splendid Thai style roof structures and manicured gardens. Photography is permitted in most areas.
Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) Thailand's most sacred temple, which is part of the Grand Palace complex. The Emerald Buddha is somewhat small (66cm high) but the surrounding decoration is extraordinary and includes walls covered by murals of the Ramayana epic, golden chedis and guardian statues from Thai mythology. It is believed to be the spiritual hub of the whole kingdom.
A walk from the Grand Palace takes you to Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), where the monks use the water to bless the visitors. The reclining Buddha here is 46m long and 15m high, with feet inlaid with 108 auspicious symbols in mother-of-pearl. It's also a place where traditional Thai massage is believed to have originated, as one of the oldest and most trusted massage schools in Bangkok is located in the temple complex.
Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn): best seen on the other side of the river or in the late afternoon. The center spire (prang) stands 79m tall, and is adorned with colored porcelain mosaic tiles, which look amazing in afternoon light. Passengers can cross the river from the pier in Wat Pho by the short ferry (THB 5).
