Good to Know
Your Journey, Step by Step
Mobile Connectivity & SIM Cards
Staying connected during your safari is super easy in Kenya. The best mobile provider is Safaricom, which offers strong coverage even in remote safari areas like Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru.
When you arrive at Nairobi airport, our team will help you:
- Buy a Safaricom SIM card (approx. KES 200–300)
- Set up your internet data pack (5GB to 10GB costs around $5–10)
- Register the SIM with your passport (required by law)
Most hotels and lodges have Wi-Fi, but it can be slow or patchy in remote areas. Having your own data connection ensures you can easily use Google Maps, WhatsApp, and post your safari stories!
Pro tip: Make sure your phone is unlocked for international SIMs.
Currency, Exchange & Payments
The official currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). While some big hotels accept USD, you’ll need local cash for:
- Shopping at markets
- Paying small tips
- Buying snacks or souvenirs
We recommend exchanging money at Nairobi airport after arrival, where you’ll get decent rates. You can also withdraw cash from ATMs in Nairobi (Visa & MasterCard work fine), but ATMs are not available in places like Masai Mara.
- $1 ≈ 130–140 KES (always check rates)
- Carry small bills (KES 100–500) for tipping & minor purchases
- Credit cards work in hotels & malls but may add 3–5% charges
Pro tip: Apps like XE Currency help you track exchange rates easily.
What to Pack for Your Safari
Kenya’s weather can change a lot—warm during the day, chilly in the mornings and evenings. It’s important to pack smart:
Light, breathable clothes in neutral colors (khaki, beige, olive)
- A warm jacket/fleece for early game drives
- Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers
- Sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen
- Camera with extra batteries & zoom lens
- Mosquito repellent & personal medicine
Avoid black and bright-colored clothes while on safari—they can attract insects or disturb animals. Keep your luggage light and pack soft bags (easy to fit in safari jeeps).
Pro tip: A small backpack is handy for daily essentials during game drives.
Safety & Wildlife Etiquette
Being close to wild animals is exciting—but safety always comes first. Your guide will brief you before each game drive. Some basic rules to follow:
- Never get out of the safari jeep unless your guide says it’s safe
- Keep voices low & avoid sudden movements
- Don’t try to feed or touch any animals
- Avoid using flash photography (especially near big cats.
Wild animals are unpredictable, and respecting their space helps everyone stay safe and makes your safari feel more natural.
Pro tip: Always keep a pair of binoculars for spotting animals from a safe distance.
Optional Hot Air Balloon Safari
Want to make your safari unforgettable? Book a hot air balloon safari over the Masai Mara. It’s a magical experience—floating over the savannah as the sun rises, spotting herds of elephants, giraffes, and more from above.
What to expect:
- Pickup before sunrise (around 4:30 AM)
- 1-hour flight with a professional pilot
- Champagne bush breakfast after landing
- Certificate of flight
Cost: $400–$450 per person (optional & not included in your package). Booking in advance is recommended, especially in peak season.
Pro tip: Dress warmly and bring your camera—you’ll want to capture every moment of this once-in-a-lifetime view.
