Badaling
The most popular and crowded section, about 70km northwest of Beijing. It’s been restored extensively and offers the classic Great Wall experience with cable cars and good facilities.
Mutianyu
About 70km northeast of Beijing, less crowded than Badaling but still well-maintained. Known for its beautiful scenery and the toboggan ride down from the wall.
Jinshanling
Located about 130km northeast of Beijing, this section offers a good mix of restored and original wall. Popular with hikers and photographers for its dramatic views.
Simatai
The only section open for night tours, about 120km northeast of Beijing. Known for its steep terrain and original Ming Dynasty construction.
Juyongguan
A mountain pass about 60km northwest of Beijing, featuring impressive gates and fortifications. Less crowded than Badaling.
Famous Passes
Shanhaiguan
Shanhaiguan is known as “First Pass Under Heaven,” where the wall meets the sea in Hebei Province.
Jiayuguan
The western terminus of the Ming Dynasty wall in Gansu Province, called “First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven.”
Yanmenguan
An important strategic pass in Shanxi Province with over 2,000 years of history.
